Honors Essay

College, the word most high school students fear yet anticipate their senior year. While it may bring stress and nervousness for the future, it is a time for a new and exciting experiences. College can also provide students a time to explore and discover diverse and innovative ideas, and an experience that can attribute to the fundamental explorations of college includes studying abroad, a program that almost all colleges provide to their students. Every student should take the opportunity to study abroad, and although there can be disadvantages, I think most students will take the negatives and turn them into a positive to be able to experience such a fantastic opportunity.

Studying abroad has many advantages and disadvantages for students. One concern that many have is the money that is needed to pay for the trip. Not every college student’s family or the student is able to pay the money for the expenses involved with the trip, and therefore, is a huge problem. Although colleges can provide scholarships for some students to go, not every student is given this scholarship and as a result will not go. Another main concern is the disease and illnesses that a student could inherit, depending on where they are traveling. Many parents want their child to be healthy and do not want to risk their child getting diagnosed with an unknown disease. With these disadvantages also comes advantages. Traveling abroad offers students so many opportunities for their future careers. For example, my future career goal is to be involved in international business, possibly having an accounting major. The knowledge I would gain from studying about their business and how they manage things will further my knowledge in the career I want to pursue and also open up connections for possible future jobs. The advantage I would be at and the level I would be able to experience this is one that seems impossible to give up.
