REFLECTION

The letter to Almudena in its entirety depicts a man whose very own nature and that of his spouse has been unwilling altered and subsequently, changed. Although the letter started with a self-conviction on giving back to their community and the world at large after feeling like they have bitten a fair share of the big round pie, the writer nor his wife did not have an explicit depth as to how much their social responsibility will influence them.

The writer in his own words, expressed how a generally looked-down upon individual has helped him and his wife break away from the bear conflicts of life (conflicts of choice and the acceptable i.e societal values) making them see life in its simplest form and appreciating the inner beauty found in people.

Furthermore, the writer was so pleased in expressing the delight he and his wife shared about their change in perspective towards the special citizens to the point of seeing the best in each of their disability. In this light, he has this to say “You are only retarded outwardly, externally, in all that disappears when life ends: so you don’t run like the others – what does that matter? You move as much as is needed and if not, we will carry you. You don’t speak and we don’t know if you ever will. And so what? With your glances and gestures we understand you very well. You don’t know how to read or write. So what? Are you going to need that in heaven? Your gestures are odd, even better – in this way you continuously remind us of the love of God.”

Although the writer is pleased with all that has happened in his life, he is still displeased to a large extent due to the fact that his other children are still entangled in this conflicts of life and the battle for constant supremacy which he feared might get a better hold of them and sway them off the higher purpose of life which he considers to be heaven.
