Personal Values

According to www.dictionary.com, ethics is “the rules of conduct recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions or a particular group” (Dictionary.com, 2010). This means that the way people act in today’s society is judged on a scale. This is not a materialistic scale, rather an imaginable scale based on society. A person’s actions can be morally correct, or right, or they can be morally wrong. But who can be the judge of right and wrong? Each of us have our own views of what is right and what is wrong, and based on our values, we make judgments. I am a competitor and most of my values are based on results.

According to the Williams Institute Ethics Awareness Inventory Assessment, my ethical profile is most closely aligned with results. I believe this is a correct analysis of my values. As mentioned above, I am a competitor. I like to win in any sport I play, any task in hand, or any goal in life. If I don’t see positive results, I consider myself a failure at that particular task or objective. I suppose I am this way for everything in life. I was raised this way particularly because I played many sports and have been quite active in the community. I realized that people go unnoticed when they fail or lose. I like to be noticed and to be acknowledged for my winning performance. This plays a major role at work as well. At my current job, we are constantly being rated on performance, such as customer experience or sales goals. The better we are at meeting our quota, the more recognition we receive and the better the chances of being promoted. Although I always want to see results, I can’t ever forget the values that my parents have taught me from a young age. I must always be respectful to people and do what is right in any situation.
