Assignment 1 on Leadership in Organization:

What style do I use?

Question: 1

Where would you place the three managers in regard to their readiness level? How should Bharat Thapa deal with each one of them?

Answer:

Readiness is the degree to which a subordinate has the ability and willingness relative to a task or job.

Here in the given case, Bharat Thapa is the owner of a 5-year-old small plastics company that employs about 20 people. The company is composed of essentially three areas: Engineering headed by Ranjeet Nakarmi, Sales headed by Babita Aryal and Production headed by Saroj Lama. After the careful reading of the case, I would like to explain the readiness level of the three managers and the appropriate action of the supervisor needed as follows:

1. The readiness level of Ranjeet is R4 (able and willing). He has the ability to work and is also willing to perform. He is fully confident in his work. The action of Bharat Thapa towards him should be S4 style of leadership, the Delegating (low task and low relationship) style.

2. The readiness level of Babita is R2 (unable but willing). She finds difficult to learn but is interesting in learning and experiencing new skills and thus she is somewhat confident in her work. The action of Bharat Thapa towards her should be S2 style of leadership, i.e. selling or coaching (high task and high relationship) style. The supervisor must provide direction to her.

3. The readiness level of Saroj is R3 (able but unwilling). He is able to develop moderate to high skills but not sure if he could achieve the task, therefore feels insecure about his task. The action of his supervisor towards him should be S3 style of leadership (low task and high relationship). The supervisor must provide support to him.
