Having a poor communication issue could stem from a variety of symptoms such as, deriving from emotions in which a boss could be in a bad mood or is simply a mean person to having the lack of social skills, or knowledge and education such as knowing how to communicate properly no matter what the situation may be.

Another cause and form of poor communication could be is if you and your boss have a language barrier such that either one of you may come from different national cultures or have different accents and dialects (Robbins & Judge, 2007 p.385).

In addition, an estimated 5 to 20 percent of the population suffers from debilitating communication apprehension or anxiety. Those who suffer from it experience undue tension and anxiety in oral communication, written communication or both. For example, oral apprehensives may find it extremely difficult to talk with others face-to-face or become extremely anxious when they have to use the telephone. As a result, they may rely on memos or faxes to convey messages when a phone call would be not only faster but also more appropriate. (Robbins & Judge, 2007 p.381)

In this case, James W Caruso starts off by saying “I’m probably not as verbally reinforcing as I could be when someone is doing a good job. I’m a very self-confident person. I don’t need to be told I’m doing a good job – but there are people who do” (Robbins & Judge, 2007 p.392).
