Business Communication Trends

“Good communication seems to be a matter of common sense. However, like many business skills that are often made to look easy, communicating effectively is not always as simple as it seems” (McElveen, 1995, p. 1). Talking and listening are still the most productive forms of communication in meeting business goals, but nowadays with the need to convey messages to many people quickly and efficiently, the development of technology has introduced new ways of interacting with employees. In a professional setting, everything that is done involves communication in one way or another. Good business communication is sharing information in ways that is useful to coworkers, business partners, and customers . In this paper, I will discuss the role business communication plays in my day-to-day work activities, what trends I have seen in my workplace, and the message types that result from these trends.

I work for a large transportation company as a logistics manager. My primary job function is to plan drivers to pick up and deliver freight in a geographical area. The role of business communication in my work activities involves the exchange of ideas between myself and other managers, account representatives and customers via telephone conversations, e-mail, and instant messaging. Listening actively to others is as important as communicating my own needs. It is imperative to understand what the other person needs and provide the best customer service possible based on that need. A few of my job functions that require the use of good business communication include interacting with account representatives to relay freight needs, getting in touch with other managers, and occasionally contacting customers. Responding to others in a timely manner via e-mail, a returned phone call or instant message help me manage my daily work activities.
