Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)

Simple Network Management Protocol is applied in network management systems to monitor network attached devices for conditions. SNMP is part of the internet protocol suite defined by internet engineering task force. It exposes management data in the form of variables on the management systems configuration. In a normal SNMP usage there are number of systems to be managed and one or more systems manages them. The protocol allows active tasks such as modifying and applying a new configuration. The management systems send the requests through the SET protocol action to support and manage a system.

The SNMP manage network consists three key components those are Managed devices, Agents, and Network Management stations. A manage device store and collect and store management and make information available to NMS using SNMP. An agent is network management software that exists in a managed device. An agent has local knowledge of management information and translates information with SNMP. SNMP is part of the Internet network management design and also it has interaction of many parts.

There are seven applications wide data types exist in SNMP. The first one is Network addresses represent addresses from a particular protocol family. The second one is counters it is non-negative integers that increase until they reach a maximum value and roll over to zero. The third one is gauges this one is non-negative integers that can increase or decrease between specified minimum and maximum values. The fourth one is Time ticks it represent the time since some event, measured in hundredth of a second. The fifth one is opaques represent an arbitrary encoding that is used to pass arbitrary information strings. The sixth one is integers it represent signed integer valued information. And the last one is unsigned information represent unsigned integer-valued information which is useful when values are always negative.
