Construct and Support an Argument

While no one has ever said that earning an MBA is easy; an MBA does not guarantee a job but it does offer opportunity and quite possibly open doors that otherwise may have never been opened, especially in the African American community. People want to make more money, people want to be more marketable, people want to achieve goals and give back to society.

It has been said that money makes the world go round. Studies have shown that people with advanced degrees earn more than those with just a bachelor’s degree. As stated in a 2002 business journal the typical MBA graduate can expect to receive a base starting salary of $75,000, according to a study by the Graduate Management Admissions Council. The typical undergraduate starting salary is $41,000. So, the master’s of business administration degree carries a $34,000 premium over undergraduate degrees. (Fairfield County Business Journal, 2002). At a time of economic crisis, income is important to everyone. The more a person earns the better quality of life one can have.

In today’s competitive world, getting an MBA degree is a step in the right direction to being more marketable and having a competitive edge over peers. A manager becomes a more effective by applying those principals and theories leaned while obtaining an MBA, to daily activities at work and to real world problems and situations that are dealt with on a regular basis. An MBA expands your opportunities for career advancement. As stated by Catherine Ahlgren, Boston University Career Center Director, “the number one reason people cite for pursuing an MBA degree is for career advancement. (Financial Times, PR Newswire, 2006). Companies need executive managers with the type of knowledge that comes from obtaining an MBA.
