Non-Verbal Communication

Nonverbal communication is communication without words; it is the communication that takes place through every bodily gesture (p. 93). A substantial part of our communication is non-verbal. Every day we react to thousands of nonverbal indications and expressions including posture, facial, eye, spatial and territorial, influences on space, artifactual, smell, touch, and time communications. The way we shale someone’s hand, to the type of hairstyle that we wear, are nonverbal components that show who we are and the impact on how we may relate others.

Our facial communications/expressions are accountable for a very large dimension of nonverbal communication. A lot of information can be given just by a smile or a frown. We all know that communication period between different cultures can change dramatically but of course there are some things that are the same everywhere. When Maria, the parole officer called Alex, the parolee back into the office because he missed a visit, and when asked why he began looking around the room loosing eye contact shows that he was nervous, and more than likely about to lie about what happen. Alex didn’t keep the eye contact with Maria because he didn’t want her to see the guilt and lies in his eyes. I know when I’m lying or when I my eyes blink a lot and I don’t want to look into the face of whoever I am talking to.

Eye communication like looking, staring, and sometimes blinking can be important nonverbal indicators depending on the situation. Messages communicated by our eyes can vary depending on the duration, direction and quality of the eye behavior (p. 98). For example, when a person looks into another person’s eyes blushing we may think that they are in love with the person, and if they don’t it means that you are a shy person ignoring someone or you don’t it to hear what is being, or respond to it.
