For the last fifteen years I have served proudly for the United States Army, actually I have been serving in the United States Army for my whole life as my dad served for twenty two years. What made me want to join was the fact that I looked up to my dad; I wanted to be like him disciplined, physically fit, high speed, kill the bad guy, and because the Army was just to cool to ignore. I signed up before I even graduated high school and was sent off to Basic Combat Training (BCT).

Upon my arrival to BCT all the new recruits received a briefing on the do’s and don’ts of being a Soldier. As I was getting this brief I was like wow the Army has its own set of laws and regulations that seem to be unfair and unethical. The one regulation I disagreed with was that I had to take a urinalysis to test for drugs. To me I felt like my privacy was stripped and taken away, keep in mind that was fifteen years ago when I was 18 years old and new to the world.

It took me a few years to realize why the Army conducted urinalysis in the first place, one it is to keep the drug abusers out of the ranks and, two, to keep good order and discipline. I’ll put it to you this way, would you want a drugged up person sitting next to you in a fire fight? I don’t and I don’t think anybody in their right mind would either. But, to some this is unethical and not right.

So, does the US Army have every right to conduct a urinalysis on every Soldier? Yes they do. Why do I think this, well I am constantly told by my supervisors to do the right thing at all times. This is stressed to every Soldier that works for me and others. If I am told to do the right thing this means I cannot do drugs on my off time. If I am living up to this standard than every other Soldier should be doing the same. If they are not and they test positive on their urinalysis than they should be held accountable.
