Management and Leadership Paper
Management is the process of working with people and resources, to accomplish an organizational goal. Leadership is a manner in which a leader aspires to persuade his or her team to launch and achieve organizational goals (Bateman & Snell, 2009). Walmart is one of the largest companies in the world; the success of the retail giant cannot be discussed without mentioning the management and leadership of the company. This paper will evaluate the management and leadership at Wal-Mart, the roles and responsibilities of leaders in maintaining a healthy culture, the globalization of management across borders, and will show two strategies that organizational managers and leaders can use to create and maintain a healthy organization.
Management versus Leadership
Many mistakenly presume that effective managers must be effective leaders. This is not always the case. According to Bateman and Snell (2009), “managers deal with necessary, daily organizational details, including planning, budgeting, staffing with appropriately skilled personnel, and monitoring results, true leadership includes effectively orchestrating important change.” The role and responsibility of leadership is to create and communicate its vision, establishing the direction in which the organization is to go, extending beyond mere management functions, to build an organizational culture infused with inspiration among associates to achieve the vision. Great leaders keep people focused on moving the organization toward its ideal future, motivating them to overcome whatever obstacles lie in the way (Bateman & Snell, 2009).
