Mount Carmel Health System in Columbus, Ohio was experiencing difficulty in retaining Information Technology (IT) employees. After further investigation it was discovered that the primary reason for leaving Mount Carmel was due to lack of advancement however, there were several other factors that needed to be changed in order to improve employee retention. The hospital faced an employee turnover rate of three to five employees leaving the facility each month causing 40% of the IT positions to be left open. However, the market indicated only an unemployment rate of less than 5%. Mount Carmel revamped its recruiting strategies by spending more face time with the Human Resource (HR) recruiter so that they would have a better perspective on the needs of the IT department. (Keener, 1999). The organization also had to adjust their pay salaries in order to become more competitive with the competition across the street. The hospital also instituted a career ladder program so that employees could train and be prepared for the next higher paid positions. One of the most important changes that this organization made was the addition of an optional morning report, that turned into a standing room only, 15-minute session where employees could discuss and trouble shoot any problems that individuals were currently faced with. This one change, has improved the hospital quality improvement program.
One of the problems many organizations face today is employee satisfaction. An employee that is not satisfied is more likely to find another job that will offer them better opportunities to make a successful living. High employee turnover rates cost an organization time, money, and energy. If...
