Kudler Fine Foods: HR Focus

Kudler Fine Foods is an upscale specialty food store in San Diego. The store sells baked goods, produce, meat, seafood, condiments, and dairy products. It allows people to create extravagant meals within the comfort of their own home. The company was founded by Kathy Kudler. Kathy Kudler was once a Vice-President of Marketing for a large defense contractor till she became tired of working in a corporate atmosphere. She found a calling in gourmet cooking. She saw an opportunity to sell ingredients for gourmet foods in the town of La Jolla. In 1998, the first Kudler Fine Foods opened (Kudler Fine Foods Portal 2003). Having direct control over hiring, ordering and customer service, she has built the company into an expanding entity. There are three stores within this organization. They are located in La Jolla, Del Mar, and Encinitas. The stores are having mixed results on sales.

Kudler Fine Foods has a HRIS system that does not seem to work for the company as it grows. Kudler uses Quick Books and outsourced its entire payroll processing to the maker of Quick Books, Intuit. The system’s database tracks personal information, pay rate, personal exemptions for tax purposes, hire date, seniority date, and organizational information. If there are any changes to information, it will be done by the employee’s supervisor and are entered by the accounting clerk. The clerk has to maintain all original and all changed files for the employee. The employees must fill out hardcopies of their time sheets each week to be sent to the accounting department to get paid. The managers control all employee files in the store, which include job application/resume, performance reviews, I-9 forms, and any disciplinary memos or performance management issues.
