Diversity in the United States has had a long and storied history with many things that would impede its progress as well as many victories. As the demographics of the United States continue to change so too do policies and understandings of the situation. While learning about these injustices I have found many things that if I had not learned, would of put me in a position to continue these practices without even realizing it.

The United States still faces a culture of oppression, and by understanding concepts from this helps me understand my own ethnic standing. Black continue to be underrepresented in higher education as only 9 percent of black applicants were enrolled at the most selective universities while whites made up 82 percent (Journal of Blacks in Higher Education (Online), 2013). This means that black students have a tougher time enrolling in these upper level institutions of education. The same article also mentions that black applicants actually rose over that time which demonstrates the barrios they face when selecting a school. Since I have learned this, I also thought about what that means for my ethnic group, whites. It signifies that whites enjoy an easier enrollment process simply because they are white and perhaps at the expense of black applicants. While this may also be a slightly skewed opinion considering that whites still make up the majority of the country, this is quickly changing.

The United States is still seeing waves of immigrants and this trend continues to rise. Of the 40 million foreign born citizens, 6.8 million of those arrived in the time period of 2005-2010 (Maxwell, 2011). This indicated that by the year 2050, the majority of United States citizens will no longer be white.
