3. Calculating the Mean Score of a Variable

4. Cronbach’s Alpha
Example: What is the reliability (internal consistency) of the multi-item scales?
Analyze → Scale → Reliability Analysis → Statistics → Scale if Item Deleted
5. Correlation Analysis
Example: Is job stress related to job satisfaction?
Analyze → Correlate → Bivariate
6. Comparison of Means – 2 Groups
Example: Is the mean income of male group significantly different form that of
the female group?
Analyze → Compare Means → Independent → Samples T-Test → Define Groups (after selection of test variable and group variable)
Note: If the Levene’s test is insignificant, assume equal variances.
7. Comparison of Means – 3 Groups
Example; Are the mean income of Chinese, Malays, and Indians significantly
different from one another? If yes, how do we determine among which
groups the true difference lies?
Analyze → Compare Means → One-Way ANOVA → move variable into the dependent list box → move variable into the factor box → Ok → Post Hoc → Turkey, Scheffe, Bonferroni, Duncan (or just select one test) → Continue → Ok
Note:
The F-test must be significant before you proceed to post-hoc test. If F-test is not significant, it means there are no differences among all the groups. Stop and do not proceed.
