Have you ever seen a person in a military uniform and thought to yourself, they look too young to be part of the military. I’m sure you never thought of the possibility that they could be part of the JROTC program. A major part of society associates JROTC with boot camp or some form of intense army workout when in fact JROTC guides many high school students on the path to graduation and becoming model citizens.

I form a part of the JROTC program and I can say by experience that JROTC has made a great impact in my life. As a growing teenager, I’m in the stage of life were I’m trying to find myself and of course like many other teenagers I talk back, I break rules and sometimes I just don’t listen. However that all changed whenever I joined JROTC. Being a JROTC cadet has disciplined me into being a better citizen, as well as helping me to develop my own character. Everything that I have achieved in JROTC is just helping me get closer to my goal which is graduating high school.

For those of you that don’t know what JROTC stands for, it stands for Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. I know what many of you are thinking right now, “wow that sounds like a very significant title” well it is. It is said that today’s youth holds the future, so what better way to ensure a bright promising future than implementing the principles of responsibility, discipline, and respect to today’s youth. The JROTC program must be a success if there are 1731 programs in existence and over 314,000 Cadets just like me in the United States. The JROTC program would be nothing without its 4,000 instructors who teach the cadets leadership skills, self-confidence, teamwork and various other skills needed to be a prosperous high school graduate. Mostly the program is run by the cadets whom the instructors refer as the “upper classmen”.
