The issues with communication that Mammoth and Harden, Harden & Harden are facing is very similar with what happens every day in the United States Military. In both situations the organizations are dealing with people in different areas of the world, different manners of doing business, constant progress checks from higher headquarters that determine further actions, and constant stove-piping of information. None of the issues are insurmountable, but they do entail proactive measures needed to counteract negative and potentially detrimental effect.

When dealing with people spread across a large geographical area face to face communication is not possible without considerable expense. In this case of Harden, Harden & Harden’s project with Mammoth Corporation, Songsri Singh needs to come up with a way to get this needed face to face communication. Without the face to face communication subtle nuances will be lost as the personnel will only be conversing through phone and written correspondence. Much of the way American’s communicate is through non-verbal gestures. Without these subtle gestures words can be taken in ways not meant. Many times a written note or e-mail fails to convey the true meaning of the sender’s intent. What was meant to be taken in a joking, or even a serious way, can be taken the exact opposite.

The other problem with having personnel spread across the country is the expense and time consuming process of bringing people together for meetings. While this may not seem to be a major communication issue, in reality it is. If the workers do not have a way to collectively collaborate ideas and thoughts, assumptions will be made instead. When the team is allowed to make assumptions the end state product may or may not be what is required.
