I had the pleasure of interviewing Ms. Ofelia DeCarlos. She is a 70 year old Filipino woman who lives in the Lawrenceville area. The topic we spoke about was Capital Punishment. Ms. DeCarlos grew up in a small town outside of Manila. She attended one of the top universities in the Philippines. The University of the Philippines. She graduated with a BA degree majoring in Accounting. She married soon after graduating from college and worked with Philippine Airlines for 6 years. She and her husband had two girls during that time. Her driving force or reason for coming to the US was her now ex-husbands dreams of moving to America. She was able to use her benefits with the airline to come to the US as tourist in 1970. They came here without any family members waiting for them. Soon after she contacted an immigrations attorney. Having a college degree proved to be very beneficial for her. There was a high demand for people with accounting degrees. This enabled her to quickly get her green card. She then partitioned for her husband and he also received his quickly. Due to financial challenges they were not able to partition for the girls until 1973. The girls were 6 and 7 at the time and were able to travel with other family members coming to the United States. They made their home in Queens, New York. My next question to her was about Capital Punishment. I wanted to know how she felt about this issue. Her Capital Punishment view has always been pro. The main thing that shaped her views always knew there were bad people in the world and bad things happen to good people. Evil things happen and the consequence to families of the victims. Even though she is catholic she always believed capital punishment is important in her country people connected with the power and use and abuse it for their own purpose.
