Background

Lucasfilm is an American movie and television company based in San Francisco, California. The company is famous for producing the Star Wars Series and the Indiana Jones series. It was also made famous for its leadership in special effects, computer animation and sound. The company was founded in 1971 by film director George Lucas. The studio has currently produced 23 films to its credit and 9 television series and specials. The company also has two main sights being in San Fransico, California and Singapore. The company also has many divisions including Skywalker Sound which is a post production sound design division. Another would be LucasArts which is a video game design division. Lucasfilm animation is another division that is responsible for the creation of cartoon entertainment but only to become and parent company of Industrial Light and Magic which is a visual effects company and Pixar Animation studios. The remaining subsidiaries are Lucas Books which creates new literature. Another subsidiary is Lucas Online which is the website division and finally Lucas Licensing which holds the rights to its merchandise and other endeavors.

The Change

Discussions relating to the possibility of The Walt Disney Company purchasing Lucasfilm officially began in May 2011, after a meeting that George Lucas had with Disney CEO Bob Iger during the inauguration of the “Star Tours: The Adventures Continue attraction”. Lucas told Iger he was considering retirement and planned to sell the company, as well as the Star Wars franchise.

In January 2012, Lucas announced his retirement from producing large-scale blockbuster films and instead re-focusing his career on smaller, independently budgeted features. In June of 2012, it was announced that producer Kathleen Kennedy, a long-term collaborator with Steven Spielberg and a producer of the Indiana Jones films, had been appointed as co-chair of Lucasfilm...
