A STUDY ON OLD AGE (65+) DEMENTIA IN LONDON

INTRODUCTION

Dementia is a syndrome or a group of related symptoms which reduces the brain’s condition and its abilities. The problems with Dementia are loss of memory, changeability of mood, reduced mental agility, loss of communication skills, reduced judgement power, reduced understanding and thinking speed, decreased interest in socialising and usual activities, and problems with controlling the emotions.

According to the Alzheimer Society, 800,000 people over the age of 65 are suffering from dementia in UK. Out of this, one-third is only woman. In London, approximately 64,600 people are suffering from Dementia. This is 7.3% of the entire 65+ aged population of London.

This study encompasses the supports available for Dementia in London, UK and an assessment for the need of dementia people. Also, PESTEL analysis would be done to understand the issues involving Dementia in London.

The entire support system for dementia can be categorized into three types – Support for the person with dementia, support for the family carers and professional help and support.

Support for the person with dementia

There are different types of support available.

1. Day Hospital – These are places where the patients attend for the assessment. People are invited to attend 1 or 2 days for the diagnosis and further support.

2. Day Centres – After the assessment is over, some people attend day centres. The centre types and the attendance days per week vary from centre to centre.

3. Support Groups – Persons who receive recent diagnosis are also supported by support groups.
