The Barnes Hospital was funded with the trust of Robert Barnes upon his death in 1892 under the support of the Methodist Episcopal Church South in St Louis and finally opened December 7th, 1914. The Jewish Hospital was funded by Jewish members of the community and has been a large part of aide for the community since 1902. Both were built with the distinction of caring for people of all creeds and nationalities. With this support the hospital took off and also took on a school for training nurses that graduated their first class in 1905. This school is now the Barnes-Jewish College of Nursing

From having an extremely low loss rate of 4% from the Spanish Flu to being one of the first hospitals to treat diabetics with insulin, winning awards for their facilities since 1927 so much credibility has been set in stone.
