Over the next few weeks XYZ Enterprises will be conducting interviews to fill the executive assistant position that is currently available. This is a permanent full time position that needs to be filled by the most qualified person. The company wants to reduce the significant cost of turnover that has recently occurred. A majority of the turnover has been traced back to poor interviewing skills and hiring practices. This report will outline the employment interviewing strategy XYZ Enterprises plans to use during the search.

The employment interview process is an intensive communication transaction that is designed to obtain or share certain kinds of information. The way to conduct a successful interview is to learn to avoid the special communication barriers that accompany the process. The six barriers that are relevant to the interview process are: differing intentions, bias, confusing facts with inferences, nonverbal communication, effects of first impressions, and organizational status.

The first barrier is differing intentions. The person conducting the interview and the person being interviewed may have different intentions on what they want to reveal during the interview. Use an appropriate questioning strategy to find out as much about the candidate as possible that is related to potential job success.

The second barrier to avoid when conducting an interview is bias. Bias slants people’s perceptions so they tend to see and hear only what they want to see and hear. The halo effect is the most prevalent type of bias. The halo effect is when managers allow the evaluation of one characteristic to be influenced by another characteristic or general impression.

Confusing facts with inferences is the third barrier that should be avoided when conduction and employment interview. Interviewers must make inferences based on the words and actions of the interviewee because there...
