Differences are source of unity and division. They have a visible impact on our way to live. Some criteria like nationality can drive to act in a certain way. In an experience in my own life, nationality is the main factor that drove us to live in South-west Houston.

My name is Souleymane. I ‘m part of a group of African student specially coming from a West-African country named Burkina Faso. Most of the students coming from our country live in South-west Houston. This, I think, can be explained by the fact that one student comes then helps the next one do his/her paperwork t6o get here. Thus, the oncoming student is received until he/she get familiar with the city and then by his/her own. Beside this reason, some people chose Houston because of the weather. But what really keeps us living one next to the others is, first, the feeling of belonging to a group that can get in touch with your family if something happens to you; because most of do not live with our parents here. Second, the language is a factor that enlarges the group: beside our country mates, speaking French is a factor that pulls other students from countries like Mali and Gabon. Finally, what I think gathered many African students the south-west Houston is how close these country are: I have some friends coming from Ghana which our country shares border with.

However, to be able to make this grouping from the same country, we as individuals had to put some of our differences aside. These differences go from what social class we are from, the political border of our parents and their profession. For example, working for the government and being rich usually means corrupted and automatically your political border will be the party of the president in power. Thus, people coming from families with different opinion don’t really hang up perfectly together because sooner or later, a sensible subject is going to pop out of your debates and break up your friendship.
