Introduction

All paid Tax Professionals must register for or renew their Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) before they prepare tax returns in 2014.

New Tax Professionals who do not already have a PTIN need to go through the registration process. The registration process requires new Tax Professionals to establish their identity with the IRS and requires them to supply additional information. Prior Tax Professionals who already have a PTIN and who have already established their identity with the IRS need to go through the renewal process. H&R Block is assisting its Company Tax Professionals to comply with the PTIN requirement by sponsoring Registration Open Houses. At these Open Houses, Tax Professionals will be guided through the registration and renewal processes. Franchisees should consider hosting Open Houses to assist their Tax Professionals. This Step-by-Step Guide shows the process to register for a PTIN. A separate Step-by-Step Guide is available showing the renewal process. Please review this Guide before attending an Open House. The Open House facilitator will also have copies available.
