The main reason for me choosing to look at a regulation like this is due to an overwhelming concern with foodborne illnesses. Having a sister that was recently diagnosed with Leukemia and needing to watch everything she eats coupled with being a parent to 5 children, not to mention looking out for my health along with that of my wife is something that is very near and dear to me. I would like to see that not only my family, but the overall population is at a reduced risk, if any risk at all, of catching some sort of foodborne illness. Being that my wife doesn’t work, I am out of the house for a greater portion of the day and often we find ourselves discussing what type of fast food to pick up on my way home.

2. Describe the proposal / change

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration proposed two (2) new food safety rules that would help to prevent foodborne illness. The proposed rules implement the landmark, bipartisan FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and were available for comment from the public for 120 days and Americans were urged to review and comment on the proposed rules.

The first rule would require makers of food being sold in the United States, whether at a foreign- or domestic based facility, to develop a formal plan for preventing their food products from causing foodborne illness. This rule would also require them to have plans for correcting and problems / issues that arise. The FDA is proposing that many food manufacturers be in compliance with the new preventive controls rules one year after the final rules are published in the Federal Register....
