This Punishment Research Paper is intended to show my opinion and researcher’s opinion on whether punishment deters crime according to research and crime statistics. I also plan on providing information to broaden society’s view concerning criminals, deviance, and punishment.

For year’s law enforcement, politicians, and society as a whole has tried various methods to try and deter crime. Society has come up with community group watch and neighborhood committees, while law enforcement has added variances in the way they operate with more undercover cars and undercover police. Politicians have tried to assist with deterring crime by constantly working on changing different crime laws. For example the newest hate crime law that was changed and signed into act by President Barack Obama. Everyone wants the answers of what is the best solution to stop crime, yet our world period still has crime. In the next couple of paragraph’s we are going to look into the different factors of how different types of punishment effect crime deterrence.

Most citizens would like to know why their tax dollars to build prisons do not seem to be helping lower the amount of crime, but they only see the factor of their tax dollars going toward building a prison. Most citizens are not really aware of whether the policies of prison are rehabilitating a prisoner or making them into more of a monster to be back released to the streets. For example: One of the types of punishment is societal protection, which is basically when a person is sent to prison away from society. The punishment is to not be able to interact with the outside world and to not have a feeling of freedom. Some could consider this basically modern day slavery because once you are a prisoner you no longer have any freedom to make decisions for yourself, those decisions are made for you as long as you belong to a...
