Public relations have been defined in many different ways, the definition often evolving because public relations constantly have changes in its roles and technological advances. “The earliest definitions emphasized press agentry and publicity, while more modern definitions incorporate the concepts of “engagement” and “relationship building”” (PRSA, 2010). Business today is extremely competitive and standing out among the competition is the constant struggle for companies. To remain competitive, a company must appeal to both the public and the median since the public is the potential buyer and the media a selling tool that sparks the interest of the buyer. By using public relations a business can interact with current and future investors, workers, and customers and has become a crucial tool in selling goods and services.

An organization's reputation and its existence depend on how the targeted public supports its goals and policies. “Public relations serve as an advocate for businesses seeking to build and maintain positive relationships with the public. Their clients include businesses, nonprofit associations, universities, hospitals, and other organizations, and build and maintain positive relationships with the public. As managers recognize the link between good public relations and the success of their organizations, they increasingly rely on public relations specialists for advice on the strategy and policy of their communications” (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2010). In this example of what PR can do for a company explains that clients of a business can be vast and not just the customer who buys the product that gets effected by how a company conducts its business. An organizations reputation relies on the degree that the targeted audients supports the policies and goals the company stands by.
