The Amanda Todd Story

Amanda Todd was only 15 years old when she committed suicide by hanging on October 10, 2012. Todd was a fan of the internet and often used video chats. There she began video chatting with a man online and exposed her breasts to him. A year after the incident, the man warned Todd if she refused to put on a sexual webcam show, he would send a picture of her breasts to everyone. When she refused, he sent her topless picture to her friends and family using the social media site Facebook.

The man continued to harass Todd and she soon became a victim of school bullying. She changed schools many times; however the unknown man would find students at each new school and proceeded to send them the nude picture. She soon became depressed and prescribed anti-depression medication. Todd soon spiraled down hill and began cutting her self and attempted to commit suicide twice. Five weeks before her suicide, she posted an 8 minute black and white video on YouTube, where she covers her face, doesn’t speak, and uses a series of home-made paper flash cards explaining her story. At the end of the video she confirms her identity with a flash card listing her name, followed by an image of her arm with several razor blade cuts.(SITE HERE/VIDEO)

Cyber-Bullying and Cyber-Stalking

Amanda told was a victim cyber-bullying/ cyber-stalking. The cyber-bully continued to harass and stalk Todd for several months. The unknown man used Facebook to contact students and teachers in all of Todd’s schools. He used the social media site to portray himself as a new student to gain her friends contact information. The man used the nude image of Todd as a tool in order to attempt to persuade her to give into his demands. (SITE HERE)

Traditional bullying and online bullying involves juvenile populations, where children will use either in person physical or verbal means in order to hurt another person. In order for traditional bullying to occur, the victim must be near the bully....
