The Fattest Kids You Know: Who Cares?

Although hard to believe, Americans have not always been obese. When the Pilgrims came over to America were they overweight? What has caused this nations struggle with obesity is the availability of fast, cheap, fatty food. Instead of cooking at home, most families would rather go out and pay for something already made. They want quick and inexpensive food. Governments should not be able to control or regulate the food Americans eat because it is their life, their choice, and their consequences.

Everyone who lives in the United States gets to map out his or her life. The only thing stopping them from doing whatever they want are the laws, but there is no law that says the government can control what people eat. One night someone might want to go to Mcdonalds, the next night Three Forks, then end the week with Chilis. Is there anything wrong with this? Does this need to stop immediately and turn into something else the government runs? Does “food justice” need to be enacted (Para 4)? If Americans want to eat the unhealthy food then they should be able to without any controversy. The government calls for regulation, but does not say anything about the TV shows that show people eating the most outrageous and fatty food available. If someone wants to eat their heart out then let them. It is their right to be able to pursue happiness and eat whatever they want.

It is not right for governments to control the food people ingest because it does not affect them. When is the last time anyone exclaimed, “I saw this little boy jumping around, smiling, eating a happy meal yesterday, and it gave me indigestion.” How does this little boy’s happiness affect the people around him, other than making them smile? Whenever he takes a bite into his burger all the fat and cholesterol is negated whenever he smiles and laughs while playing with his toy.
