How to Tell the Truth in the Workplace

According to Mastilak, Matuszewski, Miller and Woods they make a very interesting point about what causes people to be honest or dishonest. It was interesting to see how in the past, managers thought that leisure and wealth drive people’s behavior. In the past, bosses thought that employees would try to work as little as possible while trying to make as much money as possible. While this might still be true, there are more reasons that people are dishonest for a company that they work for.

One thing that was the most surprising was that people might be dishonest if they believe that they are being treated unfairly. If the think they are getting treated unfairly, to what length will an employee will go to get retaliation on their employer? For example, been treated unfairly, an employee might lie about their hours at work or make false statements against the company for their satisfaction.

The authors state that dishonest behavior is determined by whether expectations are made clearly. I think the managers should have a memo on certain things that an employee could have from the company.

Another point that the author’s make is how they reward dishonest behavior. I agree with the author’s point of rewarding dishonest behavior because when the employer rewards dishonest employees this makes it a continuous cycle within the company. Here is an example: when employees work for certain company’s they tend to take things off shelves that they don’t pay for. This affects other employees by them doing it to without any...
