Infant and maternal mortality has greatly declined over the years due to public health reforms. Environment interventions allow infants to grow up in a clean environment. Nutrition improvements have allowed children to be born healthy and mothers to have the proper treatment to give a healthy birth. Clinical medicine has also come along way alongside with technological improvements and access to healthcare. This article discusses infant and maternal mortality, reasons why they exist, challenges, and future suggestions or solutions to the issue.
Infant mortality has significantly reduced over the years and for many reasons. Public health, social welfare, and clinical medicine partnered to better address the issue of infant mortality. Infants were provided better living environments with clean drinking water and other sanitation improvements. The standard of living improved along with education levels and economic conditions promoted health. Family planning also led to the reduction of infant mortality, as families were able to avoid unintended pregnancies and plan the amount and timings of their children. Clinical interventions, including the development of fluid and electrolyte replacement therapy and safe blood transfusions, prenatal care, the establishment of neonatal intensive-care units, and other technological improvements all attributed to the decrease of infant mortality. Medicaid and other federal programs assisted in the decrease as public health actions played a key role.
