The Computer Culture of the Past and Present

Tweets, hashtags, blogs, pokes are all part of the present computer culture. How did our society come to such a convenience of communication and information? Computer technology of course! The article I have read, “Computers “changing our values, language, culture””, talks about how our society has come to adapt and lightly accept this type of computer culture. I could safely say 15, even 10 years ago these types of forums would be awkward in the least.

Computer technology has progressed leaps and bounds once people were open to the World Wide Web. Before an actual GUI (Graphical User Interface) screen, programs were typed in a command line in order to execute a file. Technology has convinced the computer culture with user friendly GUI’s and touch screen computers and tablets. The internet has influenced generations on different computer languages and jargon. Words like IM (Instant Message), texting, tweeting have become the norm for communication. High school students have adapted these words and abbreviations into their daily language and even their assignments! One of the words that were new to me is “Cray”, if that is how it is spelled. I had not a clue what it meant until I asked someone on the internet. Even googling the word would have brought me to its origin, but I did not take it that far.

One huge point the article made is about “Digital narcissism”. The computer culture uses social networking, personal blogs, and other forums to display a type of egocentric attitude....
