When people think of social media the first site that comes to mind is Facebook. Although there are other sites, such as Twitter or Instagram, Facebook is probably the most commonly used. Social networking has become part of many people’s daily routine. With social media on the rise man people are raising the question, “What are the pros and cons of social media?”
Social networking has completely captivated the attention of today’s youth. This has raised serious concerns with parents. Social media has allowed the spread of unreliable information. Recently on Facebook there have been flyers and rumors about a real live purge planning to take place. These concerns are based on a 2013 movie that allows for all criminal activity, including murder, to be legal for twelve hours. The “Louisville Purge” was set to occur on August 15, 2014. Due to this rumor the policing staff was increased on this night and citizens were on high alert and warned to stay indoors that night as a precaution. However the criminal rate on this night was the same as previous nights. This is an example as to how social media spreads false information. It also shows how criminals can use social media to provoke and commit crimes. Gang members use sites like Facebook and Twitter to recruit younger member and coordinate crimes. Because so many people post personal information, such as vacations, and their personal items this gives criminals they need to commit robberies. Due to the fact that Facebook automatically tags you at locations this gives stalkers the ability to know where and when you’re at a specific location.
With this being said, if users of social media would pay attention these sites would be safe. If people would remember simple things such as stranger danger and be careful what they read then social networking could be used for what it is meant for, to communicate with others.
