Process of Photosynthesis

The process of photosynthesis can be complicated for people to understand. First there must be an understanding of what photosynthesis is. Photosynthesis is the conversion of light energy. Light energy is converted into chemical energy. All living organisms use this process (Mauseth, 2014). The equation for the process of photosynthesis consists of the raw materials; carbon dioxide and water. Sunlight is the energy source used in the process. The end products produced are carbohydrates and oxygen (Mauseth, 2014). The process is considered as the most biochemical pathway. The reasoning is because nearly all life is dependent in one way or another. Plants trap energy from sunlight to convert into food. Sunlight has to be absorbed to begin the process of photosynthesis. Green leaves contain chlorophyll which is used in the process of photosynthesis to absorb energy from the sun. The diagram demonstrates and easy example of the process or equation of photosynthesis.

The raw material carbon dioxide is absorbed through the small openings of the plant’s leaves called the stomata. The stomata delivers the carbon dioxide to the mesophyll cells (Mauseth, 2014). Water is absorbed through the roots of the plant. The vascular tissues then transport the water up and into the leaves. Chloroplasts are where the carbon dioxide and water begin to diffuse. Chloroplasts are what makes leaves green in color. The chloroplasts contain green pigments because all colors but green are absorbed from the sunlight. The two products produced through photosynthesis are oxygen and hydrogen. The energy produced by the sun converts the water and the hydrogen and carbon dioxide is combined to produce food. The oxygen is released by the stomata. The scientific equation is 6CO2 + 12H2O + Light -> C6H12O6 + 6O2+ 6H2O (Mader, 2007).
