Troubles at Eagle Manufacturing Company

MAJOR FACTS:

Ted Jones has been the Supply Manager at Eagle Manufacturing Company for the past 2 years. Although the department’s performance levels have increased he feels his staff would benefit from additional training. The morale in Ted’s department is low. People aren’t getting paid enough. Bill Wilson, Ted’s Senior buyer, took a job with another company. He stated if he was going to have ulcers then he would be paid for them. The different departments within the company are not communicating with the Supply Management Team. Several departments contacted Ted with complaints about issues they were having with the contractors.

MAJOR PROBLEMS:

Mary Jacobs, head of administration, complained to Ted daily about the paper in the office. She stated the paper causes the machine to jam and in it reduces productivity and increases frustration with her department. Ted had to explain to Mary about the budget cuts the company had to make. Tim Raines, Vice President of Operations, stated that he ran out of quality parts causing major production problems. John, one of Ted’s experienced buyers, lost a deal to purchase robots because the estimate was from the prior year and the company was already in “sole-source” position.

SOLUTIONS:

Supply Management has relationships with all departments, as well as, the suppliers. Everyone will need to communicate better. The best solutions would be to set up monthly meetings with Department Heads to fix problems as they arise. If Ted cannot set up group meetings then perhaps he can set up individual meetings so that every department has a chance to communicate their needs. An alternate solution would be for Ted to send out emails to the Department Heads. Although, it may not be as personal as a face-to-face meeting; you still are reaching out to other departmental managers to see if their needs are met.
