THE BORDER CRISIS

Introduction

The border crisis is unfair, but it’s not surprising. When we realize the avalanche of immigrant children from Central America, seeking to enter the United States, it strikes chaos of all levels. It is a crisis, but not a surprise. It is very interesting and draws my attention because I personally belong to this community “Hispanic”. However, most of economists out there believe that immigration could be a big win for the economy of the United States. Arguments about immigrants stealing jobs and deteriorating culture are nonsense. But this is not the way to deal with this border crisis.

Thesis

This border crisis is only the latest example of how the interventionism in the United States generates unexpected consequences.

The Border Crisis

Since October last year, over 57,000 immigrant children have reached and crossed the American border, more than double of what it was two years ago, and it is expected to reach 90,000 by the end of 2014. Such a flow is overwhelming the administrative and physical abilities of migratory agencies, creating chaos. [1] The crisis at the border is unfair and exploitative. The reality is that the economies some countries such as Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala are growing both, net and per capita terms. The alarming flow of children who have crossed the border between Mexico and the United States in recent months has caught the attention of many including my own. Some classify it as a migratory opportunism. However, many organizations that defend the rights of immigrants sat the phenomenon actually represents a humanitarian crisis. It is estimated that in the last six months immigration authorities have detained children and young people across the border without a parent or an adult, unprecedented numbers. Young people who have no parents or are separated from their parents. They are coming from Central America to finally meet with their family after so many years. This is not illegal...
