There are many depressing situations that plague our world; rape, murder, and incest to name a few at the top of the list. If you were to poll the nation, these answers would rank really high, but most people never consider losing a child. The loss of a child, miscarriage or kidnapping, is one of the worst things that can ravage a woman’s health both physically and emotionally. In the short stories, “Monkey See” and “This Cody,” deal with this touchy subject in very different ways. Despite the similarities in the affair of losing a child, each story line addresses the matter in their unique way. The characters, the symptoms taken away from the unfortunate situation, and the setting in which these short stories take place vary exponentially.

In “This is Cody,” everything seems fine. It begins with the narrator and her son going to enjoy a beautiful sunny day at the park with one another. While there, the narrator loses sight of him. She tries to calm the panic stemming within her brain by soaking up the gorgeous rays, letting the warmth lull her to sleep. When she awoke, she realized her son was still nowhere to be found. Needless to say, the woman was very hard on herself. She blamed herself for his disappearance, and as a result of her “stupidity” her husband moved into his friend’s house because the mere sight of her crushed him. She was lonesome and completely miserable in this world without her son or her husband to keep her surrounded with happiness. With such a great loss, the narrator slipped into a major depression. She utilized any drug and popped every pill she could secure in her possession. At her lowest moment, she

eventually attempted suicide via overdose; not once, but twice. After the failed second attempt, she obtained a new and refreshing outlook on life, compared to her dark, depressing former state. She realized that life was a precious gift, and while she may go through trying times during her life, the world moves...
