IMPROVING PHYSICAL STAMINA OF THE ER NURSE

Licensed emergency room nurses are registered nurses who dedicate themselves to the care of patients who arrive in the emergency room with acute or severe injuries, serious illnesses or potentially life-threatening conditions. These nurses work in a fast-paced setting, they must be quick and able to efficiently and professionally respond to a variety of medical situations, including respiratory, cardiovascular and other trauma emergencies. An ER Nurse has enormous impact on the day-to-day experience of patients, helping them to feel well-cared for and confident as they face medical challenges or diminishing physical capacity. ER also demands that nurses have experience because this setting is of a time-critical nature of emergency situations that require someone with a firm foundation of basic nursing skill. It is a challenge to nurse’s knowledge and physical skills. Physical fitness is an essential component of readiness for ER Nurses to initiate their responsibility. It is a state of being that includes strong, flexible muscles and an efficient system for getting oxygen and nutrients to the body. Physical fitness is a state of being that must be maintained in this kind of profession.

As a certified ER Nurse I work in a hectic environment where I observed some of the ER Nurses can subsist and others give up due to the constant walking, lifting and running. Each day I see how challenging the busy environment is. We nurses demonstrate multi-tasking ability where we calm the chaos between patients, patient’s relatives and ER staffs. As ER Nurses we make fast moves and assured decisions regarding patient care. In this kind of setting we must be ready for the physical demands. I noticed that some of my colleagues’ are not flexible enough to perform their duties due to their body composition, less muscular strength and endurance.
