Although personal navigation devices, commonly called GPS devices. These devices have existed for car use for a number of years. These devices accurately route trucks are relatively new. Unlike car GPS units, a truck specific GPS systems take into explanation road limitations, type of load transported, truck alignment, and other concepts connected to the truck. Truck devices help prevent commercial motor vehicles from getting stuck on the roads, under bridges or other inappropriate places, preventing traffic accidents. These devices also keep commercial motor vehicles off of weight-restricted roads and bridges, which protects the structural integrity and keeps hazardous loads off restricted highways.

The use of car GPS systems can be dangerous for truck drivers. There have been several crashes of bridge strikes and other accidents on which truck drivers were using a car GPS device to route them. There are a range of federal, state, and local regulations that administrate where commercial motor vehicles may or may not travel. The federal government has created the National Network. It is comprised of the Interstate System and designated highways that are part of the federal aid primary system. The National Network totals about 200,000 miles of highways across the United States.

State or local municipalities may restrict or allow commercial vehicles. Physical restrictions happen due to low vertical allowances, such as bridges, underpasses, or length requirements. There are also legal restrictions that reflect truck prohibited roads. Other restrictions may occur based on items being transported.
