The industrial revolution and new imperialism changed the dynamics of the world in the mid 18th to late 19th Century. Industrialization became revolutionary by enabling human societies to break free from the old biological regime, in which productivity was halted by many constraints. Due to the inventions and helpful discoveries of the industrial revolution taking place across the world, expansionism maneuvered by mainly Britain, Japan, and the United States became known as the new imperialism. Because of the technological advances made by industrialization, these new imperialistic societies that were willing to create new empires were now able to.

Under the old biological regime, all civilizations functioned by strict energy constraints that limited the ability of their populations to grow and improve their quality of life. Industrialization changed this less productive way of living and modernized the world into a fast moving, machine driven society. Industrialization changed everything people new about the environment. These improved mechanical techniques and inventions gave people more control over the material conditions of their lives. New machines were created that did not have to rely on the energy of nature anymore. The coal and steam combination founded during this period really got machinery inventions going. New machines for planting and harvesting were allowed more land to be cultivated, and fertilizers produced quickly in factories also increased the productivity produced out of the land. New electrical discoveries and preservation inventions allowed for food to be maintained and preserved for a lot longer than before. New transportation and infrastructure made it easier for people to move and travel from place to place. Strides made by humans before the industrial revolution cannot compare to the ideas and creations sprung up during this period.
