Visualize a world where every human being was the same. Every person thought alike, grew up with an identical background, and were taught similar views, values, as well as a matching mindset. Their appearances were undistinguishable height, skin color, and weight. Not one person would have their own identity or have a chance let their creativity and uniqueness empower in a situation; there would already be millions exactly like them. Envision that setting within an organization; not a very pleasant scenery. There would be “replicas” of everyone walking around. If organizations require high levels of uniformity, it alters the business’s success and limits the innovation and expansion. “Diversity represents the multitude of individual differences and similarities that exist among people” (Kinicki &Kreitner, 2013). It is essential that owners and managers of organizations understand the importance of diversity, and how it can cultivate the company’s innovation, and bring along new challenges. Diversity is very helpful in an organization because each person’s distinct upbringing caused by their gender, ethnicity, or race offers a new perspective as well as a variety of possible solutions to problems.

Understanding Diversity

When everyone recognizes that no one person is the same as another, it makes life easier, especially within an organization. It is okay to be similar in many ways but it is also acceptable to be different internally as well as externally. “Diversity exists to unite diverse perspectives, capabilities, and talents in pursuit of common purposes and mutually beneficial results” (Hickman, 2006). As stated by the author, when people from different walks of life or corners of the Earth come together in a group with a purpose, they tend to collaborate and merge each individuals perspective and experience to aid in the pursuit toward the coinciding goal.
