Over these last three weeks, I have observed and experienced what it means to be of a different ethnicity and/or race. The first incident happened in one of my classes. A student got very defensive to our T.A. because she is from India and has a thick accent. He questioned why she would be teaching a class if many people could not understand her. I believe he got angry with our T.A. because he was not comfortable with someone that comes from another country and her native language is not English (Feagin 2012: 374). In other words, he is not used to cultural diversity. Another observation I saw was that two students, a male and female, were arguing with each other about the issue of gender equality. The male believed that men as a group dominate women as a group, especially in terms of socioeconomic power and resources which, in other words, is called a patriarchal system (Feagin 2012: 46). His family probably works in that the male has more power so he was raised on that belief. My last incident was that I heard from my friend that an African American girl in her class had to deal with gendered racism from other males (Feagin 2012: 46). They did not want to work in a group with her because she was not only a girl, but also black. Again, this probably comes from how they were raised by their parents in that sense.

I have experienced it from being stereotyped from my classmates as a loud and obnoxious Italian. They used ethnic stereotype because I told them I was Italian and they assumed I was like the Italians that are in movies and television. They were influenced by the media that a group of people act in a certain way that does not portray them in a positive...
