For my paper today on a person who was very important to the Jewish religion I will be speaking about King David. I will explain the important influences and effects he has directly had on Judaism and explain any religious symbols, rituals or important events lining him to Judaism. According to "Jewish Virtual Library" (2014), “In his 40 years as a ruler, between approximately 1010 and 970 BCE, he united the people of Israel, led them to victory in battle, conquered land and paved the way for his son, Solomon to build the Holy Temple.” (King David).

King David started out his life simple, he was a shepherd in the town of Bethlehem. He was the eighth son to his mother and father. He was born in 907 BCE. One day he was approached by the prophet Samuel and was anointed. This didn’t effect David much for he went back into the fields and continued to attend to his flock of sheep.

King Saul had called upon David one day to play music for him. King Saul was very pleased by David’s abilities as a musician and had decided to keep him as one of his personal musicians to help ease King Saul’s melancholy moods. King Saul took a liking to David and after a while had made him his son-in-law by marring him and his daughter Michal and also had become the armor-bearer.

One of the most remembered events in King David’s life was his fight against the giant Goliath when he was just a boy. David was armed with only a few stones, a stick, and a slingshot against the giant, but he showed no fear just tremendous courage. Many soldiers and skilled warriors had been towering in fear from goliath for about 40 days before David stood up and in the name of G-d and himself killed the giant. This conquest for David had earned him commander of King Saul’s troops. Because of this David had started to form a close friendship with King Saul’s son Jonathan.
