‘‘The New Oil by Jeneen Interlandi’’ is about water privatization, the global crisis on freshwater and how water has become a multimillion dollar business in the last twenty years.

In this article Interlandi informs how water has become somewhat the same as oil. Interlandi first talks about a lake located in Sitka, Alaska. Where two companies one named True Alaska Bottling and the other S2C Global are trying to use eighty million of gallons from the lake and transfer them to a water plant in Mumbai. If both companies accomplish their goals it will bring about nighty million dollars to the city of Sitka.

Another problem that Interlandi explains is water privatization is becoming an issue in different countries. One country is Bolivia where they privatized their water supplies in exchange of some economic assistance. But something different took place in Bolivia. Water prices increased because repairs and expansions were needed. Because of the high water prices people with no money were left without any water because they simply cannot afford it. The high prices created riots and the water companies had to leave the country and the control was turned over to the public utility. According to Interlandi’s article water privatization also caused a couple of issues in the United States. Some cities in the U.S want to concede their water infrastructure to private companies. While other cities are spending lots of money in court to get rid of the companies privatizing their water.

Interlandi also touches on the freshwater crisis happening around the globe. She states that all of the freshwater sources we use are decreasing at a faster rate than nature can replenish also the world population has increased so has the water demand .
