Abstract

Less than one percent of the United States population decides that they want to join the United States military. Everyone that does, knows well that by doing so they are willingly giving up everything in their lives to defend this country. Not everyone understands everything that encompasses such a profession as ours. But I was one of the individuals who thought they did, and at a very young age. I was also a child that grew up with the military to begin with so it wasn’t a very unfamiliar life style. There are a lot of things you learn while being in the military that is different than in the civilian world. Such as the importance of being in the right place, at the right time, in the right uniform. Even in the civilian world you realize that something as simple as that, if not done properly, can lead to disaster. Being a member of the military also requires us to be held to a much higher standard. And we are being entrusted to defend people’s lives and this country. If someone was to be late during day to day operations or in the field, especially as controllers, we could be putting someone’s life in danger. It also doesn’t matter who the individual is, whether you are a junior enlisted, NCO or commissioned officer. We all may have slightly different responsibilities and expectations but we all are here to accomplish the same mission.

So ever since I can remember from being a really young child, all I have ever wanted to do was join the United States military. I thought that everyone that was in the military was so cool and inspiring. I frequently changed my mind about what specifically I wanted to be when I joined all the way up until senior year of high school. I also admit that I thought I knew way more than I did at times.
