Industry Analysis & Current StateThe Chinese automobile industry is highly . fragmented and has been recognized by its central government as a pillar industry to the national economy. The Chinese government views this industry as critical for China’s development and a source of potential global competitive advantage and job growth. There are three main players in the industry the central government, local governments, and the automakers. The central government's main priority is to manage the growth of the industry to perpetuate employment and pursues a strategy of consolidation, technology acquisition, and Chinese brand development. China is the only major auto market in the world that does not disclose official retail numbers. Most analyses use production data. By 2010, China became the world’s largest automobile producer with 18 million vehicles produced. Industry growth has been primarily driven by rising domestic demand. This rise in demand is primarily fueled by a growing middle class, rising incomes, and a shift in government mindset supporting growth. The Chinese automobile industry is highly fragmented and made up of a mix of major global companies and domestic firms. Automakers are divided into three groups by ownership: (1) stateowned enterprises (SOEs); (2) privately owned enterprises; and (3) foreign firms. Due to high government regulation, foreign firms may only the Chinese market through approved joint ventures with Chinese firms. There is a multitude (approximately 80) automobile manufactures in China and approximately 8,000 automotive companies operating in other related automotive segments within China.
