Secondary Research Paper

According to Leepson (1991) animal testing and research has been a debated topic for over 100 years (p. 1). People wonder if the animals are being treated right in the research or test. They also wonder if the research or test is necessary. These are just some issues debated on out of many issues of animal testing and research.

The debate of animal testing and research mainly has one issue; is animal testing and research ethical? According to Dixon (2000), there are two reasons why animal research is conducted. The first reason for animal research is to find out more about the animals and secondly to test procedures on them to see if the procedures are harmful to humans or not (para. 1). But inside these reasons, there are major debates on how the animals are being treated or if the research is necessary. These reasons bring up why animal research and testing is an issue.

One debate of animal testing and research is it necessary. Leepson (1991) states most Americans think animal research that is used for scientific reasons is necessary. There are a select few who want animal research banned completely. According to them, animal research is unnecessary, repetitive, and doesn’t support human health and safety. The Americans who do support animal research believe it can warn people in the future by fighting cancers and AIDS (p. 1).

Another debate of animal testing and research is how close the animals being tested resemble humans. Sinha (2006) comments that animals are poor models for human physiology; since animals are poor models, the actual procedure will take longer to predict on humans (p. 728). Also Perel, Roberts, Sena, Wheble, Briscoe, Sandercock, et al. (2006) state animals are poor study qualities (p. 4). One of Dixon’s (2000) debate points is on how chimpanzees share 99 percent of their genes with...
