Importance of Teams

As managers of a health care organization, we have noticed that the volume of calls to our call center has doubled over the past year. Presently, our company does not have the budget to hire additional staff, but we do have 20,000 dollars available to increase efficiency and customer satisfaction. It is our duty as leaders to understand and develop a culture throughout our organization on how valuable teams are in a health care setting. In developing this culture, we will research how teams are used in other industries, such as aviation and auto racing. In doing this, we will utilize the best practices and apply them to our organization. As we implement these changes to our organization, we will use the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) organizational process to identify and address problems in the teamwork processes.

Healthcare starts from the lowest positions: environmental services, dietary services, techs, LVNs/CNAs, RNs, RTs, PTs, physician’s assistances, physicians, and hospital management are all vital to healthcare. The linen service and medical supply people are essentials to keep the hospital operable.

“…from the day you enter the door of your first job, your role will include being part of a team” (Buchbinder & Shanks, 2012, p. 288). In Paul’s job, EMS, he is part of a two-man team. Between the EMT and the Paramedic, there are different responsibilities which both need to understand and work with each other to reach a common goal. In an ER, there is an essential bond relationship between emergency physician and nurse, and nurse with a tech. Every team is critical since they work in unison with each other.
