Why Community Colleges Should Not Be Tuition Free
There have been speculations as to whether or not community colleges should be free. I believe they should not become tuition free. The negatives out way the positives. The decision can hurt people, while trying to help others. The decision to make community colleges tuition free can cause a dilemma between the nation.
The decision to whether or not make community colleges tuition free was brought up by President Obama. He has proposed that the federal government should cover 75% of the cost of tuition and states pay the rest. The decision has yet to be made. If the decision to make community colleges tuition free happens, there could be many complications. The disadvantages of making community colleges tuition free would be extremely unfair to the taxpayers. Although it will reduce costs for families that have people in their homes going to college, it will increase costs for taxpayers, who may not have any children in college or are themselves not in college. Also, many people do not need free tuition, but since people tend to consume more, when prices are reduced, in result it will cause even more overcrowded classrooms (Herk 3). If this proposal does happen, more people would decide to go to community college, which means overcrowded classrooms and not having a better quality education (Herk 4). Another issue with making community colleges tuition free is that since it would be free, people wouldn’t take it as seriously and earn their degrees at a lower rate. We need to remain with the tuitions we have now because students will take college and the experience more seriously and promote themselves to achieve more and go on with their education.
I would most likely agree with making community colleges tuition free, if it didn’t hurt the taxpayer’s pockets. Most of the people who are going to be paying more aren’t the ones who are going to...
