The three principles of democracy are popular sovereignty, political equality, and political liberty. Popular sovereignty is when people are the ultimate source of government authority and that what the government does is determined by what the people want. With this each state can make their own choices, but sometimes the majority isn’t always right. Also, people have more freedom, but that isn’t always a good thing, as people can take advantage of that freedom. There should be a limit to how much freedom we have and at times, government interference is a necessity. Popular sovereignty can be found in the 9th Amendment, which are traditional rights not listed in the Constitution that are retained by the people. Political equality is the idea that each person, being of equal intrinsic value as other human beings, carries the same weight in voting and other political decision making. Political equality can be found in the 14th Amendment which grants citizenship to “all persons born or naturalized in the United States”. Political liberty is basic freedoms essential to the formation and expression of majority opinion and its translation into public policies. The 1st Amendment prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, impeding the free exercise of religion, abridging the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, interfering with the right to peaceably assemble or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances.
